From the Ground Up: Assessing and Treating the Kinetic Chain in Overhead Athletes

Program Description

The purpose of this educational program is to provide a comprehensive, integrated approach of the overhead athlete, emphasizing new biomechanical research of the kinetic chain, as well as corresponding assessment and treatment methods, based on current evidence. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of current research on the biomechanics of the throwing motion, with emphasis on how the motion and sequencing of both proximal and distal segments of the kinetic chain directly applied to clinical practice.

Program Objectives

Describe the biomechanics and pathomechanics of the overhead throwing motion. Appraise selected examination techniques to assess the kinematic chain.  Synthesize the best current evidence for designing therapeutic interventions for identified deficits in the kinetic chain. Assess the optimum outcomes to determine the efficacy of the examination, diagnosis, and treatment interventions.

Speakers

Matthew Gauthier, PT, DPT, SCS

Matt Gauthier is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and ABPTS Sports Certified Specialist with 9 years of clinical experience. Dr. Gauthier received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University, his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Indiana University, and is currently earning his PhD from Rush University. He practices in Chicago, IL where he specializes in the treatment of the athletic population ranging from youth athletes to professional and olympic athletes. In addition to his work in the clinic, he is the manager of Athletico’s Overhead Athlete Program, faculty for coursework in Evidence in Motion’s Sports Physical Therapy Residency, and adjunct faculty for Baylor University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. His research interests include return-to-sport testing of the upper extremity, biomechanics of the overhead athlete, and upper extremity physical performance tests.
