This session is a follow-up to the AMSC program with the original presenters and members of the Sports Performanc SIG. Original Program Description: Typical sports-specific rehabilitation focuses on both return to prior level of sport performance and the prevention of re-injury. Emerging evidence demonstrates that programming and biomechanical coaching may not be consistent between injury prevention and sports performance programming. Cueing towards a hip-dominant jump landing strategy or avoidance of a dynamic knee valgus with change of direction has been found beneficial in injury prevention, but does this same cueing carry over to sports performance training? This course will examine two common movement patterns required for high-level sport participation: jumping and change of direction. Current evidence regarding normal muscle activation patterns and associated biomechanics will be discussed. Strategies for incorporating injury prevention programming into the rehabilitation process will be discussed. This course will also take a deep dive into the high-level performance demands of each of these tasks and provide examples of training programs aimed to maximize task performance. Attendees will be exposed to both injury prevention and performance focused drills and training to incorporate across the return to sport spectrum to allow athletes to return to previous levels of competitive sport performance.
Session Objectives: Examine current evidence related to biomechanics and injury risk during the performance of jumping and change of direction tasks. Outline determinants of maximal jumping and change of direction performance. Discuss cueing and movement strategies utilized for prevention or performance during rehabilitation. Develop return-to-sports programming that maximizes performance and mitigates re-injury risk.
